İzmir Şehir Hastanesi’nde, nadir görülen vajen kanseri tanısı alan 68 yaşındaki bir hastaya ilk kez brakiterapi tedavisi uygulandı.

At İzmir City Hospital, brachytherapy treatment was performed for the first time on a 68-year-old patient diagnosed with the rare condition of vaginal cancer.

During the treatment process, the patient first underwent a five-week course of external beam radiotherapy concurrently with chemotherapy. After achieving an 80% reduction in tumor size, high-dose radiation was delivered directly to the tumor site using the brachytherapy method.

The procedure was carried out under spinal anesthesia by Dr. Volkan Semiz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeliha Güzelöz Çapar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mihriban Erdoğan, and Anesthesiology Specialist Dr. Aylin Ateşalp, using a patient-specific applicator developed for this purpose.

Highlighting the importance of brachytherapy, Radiation Oncology Specialist Dr. Volkan Semiz stated:

“Brachytherapy is a form of internal radiotherapy used in cancer treatment. Unlike external beam radiation, the radiation source is placed directly inside or near the tumor. This allows the delivery of high-dose radiation to the tumor while minimizing damage to healthy tissues, thereby improving treatment success. It is a highly effective method, particularly for gynecological cancers such as vaginal cancer.”

This first brachytherapy procedure performed at İzmir City Hospital aims to enhance treatment success and contribute to the patient’s complete recovery.
